First, watch the video about Maya Lin’s Vietnam War memorial posted in this module. Then read your textbook chapter 4.7 to learn about the controversies surrounding Lin’s memorial.  Next, visit a war memorial in your area. Doing these activities in this order will make the assignment easier for you.

Maya Lin’s Vietnam War memorial

Vietnam War memorial in my area

You must get out of your vehicle, WALK AROUND the memorial, take a selfie, and post it here for full points. (If you are not comfortable with posting a selfie, you can write your name and the course number of our class with a thick marker on a piece of paper and place it in front of the memorial and take a photo of the memorial and your name. In other words, I need some type of evidence that you have made the trip.  NO PICTURE/selfie will result in a loss of 10 points.)

  1. Explain briefly, in your own words, the controversy that surrounded Lin’s design for the Vietnam War Memorial.
  2. Compare the external appearance of the memorial you visited with Maya Lin’s Vietnam memorial. Are there any similarities in the appearance of the memorial? Then, include your opinions on both the memorial in your area and also Maya Lin’s memorial. Is one more effective than the other? Why?
  3. Next, compare your local  war memorial with either Wohaw’s ledger drawing or Boccioni’s sculpture Unique Forms of Continuity in Space (watch the video in this module). Besides the fact that one is a drawing (or sculpture) and the other a war memorial, how do they differ in their intentions? Remember, all three works relate to how we treat war/ political conflict in art.

Remember to respond to a classmate’s discussion entry! (10 points)

FYI: For more information on Wohaw’s drawing and the circumstances of the time, consult this terrific article from the Chicago Tribune: Native American Artist Depicted Culture in Transition
