Write a short rhetorical analysis of Mark Edmundson’s essay “Narcissus Regards his Book / The Common Reader Now.” The purpose of this essay is to demonstrate your understanding of the “speech act” and “modes of persuasion” presented in class.
The opening paragraph should identify the author, audience, and subject/purpose of the essay (the three components of the speech act). In the body of the essay, give three examples of rhetorical appeals Edmundson uses to achieve his purpose.
It is not necessary to have examples of all three kinds of rhetorical appeals (ethical, logical, pathetic). What is important, however, is that you are able to explain how each selected passage achieves its modal objective. For example, if it is a logical appeal, how does the passage satisfy the definition of logos? It is expected that you will incorporate direct quotes from the article into your analysis using whatever citation skills you learned in English 1101.
Conclude your essay by reminding the reader of Edmundson’s purpose and making a judgment of your own about his ideas. Do you agree or disagree with him? Give your best reason why (logical appeal).
There is no minimum length requirement for this essay.
