Throughout my journey of cultural competency, I have been able to explore my own cultural identity and heritage and confront biases and stereotypes through various experiences and coursework. As I have learned from articles such as “Cultural Competence: An Integrative Approach” (Trevino, 2019), understanding and acknowledging one’s own cultural background is crucial in order to effectively communicate and connect with individuals from different cultures. Additionally, I have gained an awareness and understanding of the complexities of the modern healthcare delivery system and its various biases and stereotypes. For example, “Structural Competence and Health Disparities: A Framework for Understanding and Addressing Health Inequities” (Smedley et al., 2020) discusses the impact of systemic issues such as poverty and discrimination on healthcare access and outcomes for certain marginalized populations. Furthermore, I have developed a keen awareness of the socialization process that brings the provider into the complex healthcare system through my education and training.
