Toulmin Model of the Argument
-Claim Assertion or Thesis
-Grounds Serves as a foundation, justifying the main viewpoint
-Warrant Connects the Claim to the Grounds
-Backing additional evidence to support the claim
-Counterclaim (Qualifier) Allows for special cases, helps establish the writer’s credibility (remember ethos?), acknowledges other sides of the argument, persuades readers to ignore bias
-Rebuttal a counterpunch that serves to reestablish the claim.
Toulmin in action:
A hotel manager, or lodging manager, is defined by most people as a person who manages the operation of a hotel, the important duties of which include management of staff, business management, guest satisfaction, customer service, hiring and firing, and other such functions. At the Gladstone, a hotel located in the heart of Downtown Miami, the manger must also be able to deal with the needs of a diverse, multilingual, multicultural staff and guests, that are just as diverse as the staff, from all over the globe. That is why we are sending forward John Maultsby as our top candidate for your final approval. John Maultsby possesses all of the qualities that the Gladstone requires. He is fluent in six languages, which meets the needs of an international guest list, he has managed a staff beyond what the Gladstone requires, and he comes with three decades of experience, which is more or equal to what the other candidates have. The following narrative shall further explain why even though the others come with talents that are undeniably attractive, John Maultsby is a far superior candidate for the Job.
