You need to have watched the documentary film posted last week and read, at least, the Instructor’s Notes on Ch. 20 this week to make satisfyingly thoughtful contributions to these questions. This gets not only a Discussion grade (100 points possible) but also a grade for part two of the Final Exam (30 points possible).
1) Whose position is closer to your own on the question of the responsibility of affluent nations toward the global poor: Hardin’s or Singer’s? Share why, using the language this course has given you. (Are your justifications from utilitarian, deontological, natural law considerations? Don’t just say ‘yes’ or ‘np’. Explain your reasoning.
2) What connections do you see between Pogge’s position and some of the analyses by various speakers in the documentary ‘The End of Poverty’? (last week’s module)
3) Hardin’s lifeboat metaphor expresses a concern or a fear that some people have to justify not helping the global poor. Do you find the perception/image of poor nations in his metaphor accurate?
