For this assignment, I want everyone to consider a couple of the theories of motivation we discuss this week in regards to their teaching and learning projects. Here’s a brief recap of some of those theories and their major ideas.
In goal theory, people are believed to be motivated toward specific achievement goals for either mastery and/or performance reasons. There are four main goal types we discussed: mastery approach, mastery avoidance, performance approach, and performance avoidance.
In expectancy-value theory, your motivation and behaviors are influenced by two factors: expectancies for success and task values.
Expectancies include:
Prior success and failure
Perceived difficulty
Availability of resources or support
Necessary effort
Values include:
Utility
Importance
Interest/Enjoyment
Cost
ANSWER THESE QUESTIONS BELOW:
1. Which of these goal types best represent your approach to this project. Make sure to define what this approach is and how you think it has influenced your motivation towards your performance.
2. Which expectancy AND value do you think are influencing your motivation toward this project? Make sure to elaborate on HOW each one influences decisions you have made (e.g. how much time you have put in, your choice of lesson, why you decide to work alone vs in a group). It’s possible there are multiple expectancies and values at play, so how might those have also contributed to your motivation and behaviors?
