In Chapter 15 of The Great Gatsby, the atmosphere at Gatsby’s party is becoming increasingly chaotic. There is a sense of desperation and disarray that reflects the state of Gatsby’s dream. Nick meets a few people who are familiar to him at the party, including Jordan Baker and Charlotte Washington, a woman he’d met previously in New York City. Nick also notices several men eyeing Daisy with lustful desire; one man in particular seems to have an almost predatory look on his face as he stares at her.
Summarize what is happening in Ch. 15.
At one point during the evening, Daisy gets pulled away from Tom by two loitering men, much to Tom’s displeasure. He follows them outside and begins yelling for them to leave her alone. Eventually, all three return inside with Daisy looking shaken up but unharmed. Later on in the night, Nick sees Gatsby talking intently with two unidentified women while sitting on a couch near where Daisy was seated earlier. However, when Nick goes over to listen in on their conversation it becomes evident that they do not know each other very well and are merely engaging in idle chatter about books and art before eventually going their separate ways.
The party continues late into the night with no sign of slowing down despite Jay being noticeably absent most of it aside from brief appearances here and there throughout the evening (he has been avoiding Daisy after her encounter with those two men). As people begin pouring out into the streets around 3am or so—some drunker than others—Nick decides it would be best if he left too since things seem to be getting out of hand quickly now that both Tom and Daisy have departed earlier in search for food or something else entirely unknown by this point in time (it’s rumored amongst guests that Tom had taken off angrily). By this point even Jordan has said goodbye leaving only Nick behind who is just about ready to follow suit when suddenly Jay appears again seemingly out of nowhere proclaiming “they’re gone! They went home!” It is implied here that Jay was able to chase away everyone except for Nick because he believes only outsiders like himself can truly understand what tonight meant for him–a romantic gesture towards his beloved Daisy which turned sour due to external circumstances beyond his control (or maybe even caused by him?). Now standing alone together beneath an illuminated sky filled stars above them, Jay looks up towards heavens above as if searching for answers before finally turning back towards Nick saying “Can’t repeat past… Can’t repeat past.. I keep thinking about my life… Mine own dreams…. Such a waste… Such a waste…”
