The narrator describes Oscar’s transition from childhood into adolescence as a difficult one. He was an overweight, awkward and socially isolated child who was constantly made fun of by his peers and felt out of place in the Dominican Republic. His interests, such as science fiction and comic books, made him an even greater target for teasing which only intensified as he grew older. Despite all this, Oscar had a strong sense of optimism and could still find joy in the world around him due to his love for literature, movies, music and art.

Oscar seemed to take comfort in these passions which were encouraged by his mother and uncle who both provided different types of support during this transitional period. His mother did her best to help him adjust but couldn’t always protect him from those who mocked or marginalized him while his Uncle Tio saw himself in Oscar and tried to give him advice that would help make life easier.

Despite their efforts however, Oscar continued to struggle with fitting in during his teenage years since he didn’t conform to Dominican-American culture like many of his peers did; instead he chose to live according to what felt right for himself which often brought criticism from those around him. As time went on though, he gradually began gaining confidence in himself  and started standing up for what he believed was right despite not really having anyone else’s approval or acceptance for doing so. This newfound self-confidence eventually allowed Oscar the courage needed to pursue relationships with girls without letting their opinions impact how he viewed himself negatively anymore – something that had been difficult prior due to low self esteem resulting from bullying throughout school years prior. Ultimately it appears that while it may have taken some time for Oscar’s transformation into adulthood; through sheer determination & inner strength (coupled with support system)he emerged triumphant nonetheless!
