What is the impact of systematic racism on individuals, communities and society as a whole?
The impact of systemic racism on individuals, communities and society as a whole can be immense. On an individual level, systemic racism has been linked to psychological distress such as depression, anxiety and low self-esteem. This may affect one’s ability to succeed in school or at work due to lack of confidence or feeling overwhelmed by the challenges they face which further perpetuates unequal access to opportunities for racialized people (Mendelson et al., 2020).

Systemic racism also has far reaching effects on communities. For instance, it can lead to disparate access to quality education and healthcare services based on race which results in lower life expectancy rates among certain racial groups (Uzodinma & Ohiaeri, 2009). Moreover economic disparities can widen due to lack of employment opportunities for certain minority groups. Consequently this leads toward greater inequality across different areas such as housing wealth leading cycle poverty which many times difficult break out from without outside help.
