When I think back on my childhood, one event that stands out in my mind is the time I got lost at a carnival. It was summertime and the fair had come to town. My parents had taken me and my siblings out for the evening, and we were all excited with anticipation of what the night would bring.
A childhood event. Think of an experience when you learned something for the first time, or when you realized how important someone was for you.
It seemed like there were endless rides and attractions to explore, so when it came time for us to part ways for a little while, I jumped at the chance to wander around on my own. The lights from the ferris wheel shone brightly against the darkening night sky as I headed off in search of adventure.
I must have been around seven or eight years old at this point in my life, but even then I knew enough not to be too far away from my parents’ watchful eyes. Unfortunately though, after about 30 minutes of running around wildly between rides and food stalls, I suddenly realized that I had no idea where anyone was!
Panic started to set in as it became increasingly obvious that this wasn’t going well – especially since it was getting darker by the minute! Thankfully though it didn’t take long before a kind security guard spotted me looking distressed and dazed amongst some of the other fairground folk. He kindly asked if he could help me find who ever it was that had brought me here – although he did look a bit concerned when he heard how young I was!
In any case after making sure that all his bases were covered (he even contacted local law enforcement just in case!) we eventually found both my parents who were frantically searching for me by now. They both looked very relieved upon seeing our reunion but also quite angry too – understandably so given how scared they must have been when they noticed their only daughter wasn’t anywhere close anymore!
That experience taught me an invaluable lesson about always being aware of your surroundings; something which has served me well throughout much of adulthood too. Even today whenever someone mentions carnivals or amusement parks – many happy memories still resurface along with that same feeling of relief upon being found safe after becoming separated from everyone else during such an enjoyable outing!
