My current research focuses on the impact of technology on people’s lives, specifically how it changes their work and leisure activities. I am looking at both the positive and negative effects of technology in this regard. So far, I have identified a range of topics to explore such as the implications for new jobs created by technological advances, how technology has changed the way we socialize and communicate, and the balance between work/life that is being affected by technology’s rise.
Provide an overview of your ongoing research. What issues are you encountering?
The main issue that I am encountering during my research is access to data. Gathering data related to these topics can be difficult since many organizations are reluctant to open up their internal information or provide access to user data if they think it could affect their profits or reputation. This makes it difficult to effectively analyze trends over time with respect to any particular topic. Additionally, while there is plenty of anecdotal evidence available from public sources such as news articles and blogs, this evidence may not always accurately reflect what is actually happening in terms of usage patterns or overall societal impacts due to its limited scope. As such, finding reliable sources that provide more comprehensive quantitative data can be challenging.
Another challenge that I have encountered so far involves sorting through all the available data once it has been obtained; understanding what aspects are important for analysis versus those which are inconsequential can be confusing at times depending on the type of information being gathered (i.e., qualitative vs quantitative). For example, when looking at social media usage patterns you need to consider factors like total users per platform versus average users per platform; understanding these distinctions can help you better evaluate how people interact with each other online relative to traditional means of communication such as face-to-face conversations or phone calls.
Finally, another issue I have encountered relates more broadly towards understanding how different aspects of society are affected by technological advancement – whether positively or negatively – based upon individual experiences rather than generalizable assumptions about certain potential outcomes (such as increased productivity leading towards job losses). To do this effectively requires gathering qualitative stories from real people who use technology regularly in order to understand both sides: those who benefit from technological advances and those who experience negative repercussions due its implementation into everyday life routines (particularly when considering automation).
Overall, my ongoing research explores a number of different issues related to technology’s impact on our lives; however obtaining sufficient amounts reliable data remains an obstacle thus far in my efforts but one that I am actively pursuing solutions for through interviews with subject matter experts within various fields including sociology and economics among others who may be able shed light on additional relevant structures which could aid me in organizing meaningful analysis results from collected sources..
