One of the heroic characters in Geoffrey Canada’s novel Fist, Stick, Knife, Gun is Tony. Throughout the story he demonstrates numerous acts of heroism, such as when he puts himself in danger to protect his friends from a group of thugs (page 88). This scene is described as “A circle of young men closed around us. We were surrounded. I felt my heart racing with fear and uncertainty…rather than run away or freeze up like my friends had done , I stepped into the center of these wild-eyed kids, looking for an opening to escape.” Here we see Tony taking a courageous stand against overwhelming odds in order to protect his friends and it shows that despite being scared , he chose courage over fear.
