James Fenimore Cooper was an American novelist and historian who is best known for his “Leatherstocking Tales”, a series of five novels set in the wilderness of upstate New York during the late 1700s. He was born on September 15th, 1789 in Burlington, New Jersey. His most famous work is The Last of the Mohicans which depicts a noble Indian chief battling to save his people from destruction.
