An abstract is a one-paragraph summary of a research project. It allows readers to
quickly grasp the purpose and major ideas of a research project and let other
researchers/presenters/attendees know whether watching your full presentation will be
worthwhile. The abstract is the advertisement that the presentation deserves the
audience’s attention.
Texas A&M University-Commerce accepted my IRB application, and I was given the go-ahead to carry out this project. I then reached out to our neighborhood senior center and asked the director for approval to finish this project there. In this study, the intervention plan implemented at the East Texas Senior Citizen Center will include education about lifestyle modification that entails a DASH (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) diet plan and physical activities.
A planned intervention in this project will involve asking participants at an East Texas Senior Citizen Center to complete a multi-question survey of hypertension knowledge and its association with diet. A 15-minute educational session will be provided about high blood pressure and how the DASH diet/exercise can effectively lower blood pressure. Later, the participants will be asked to complete a separate questionnaire on whether they can incorporate the DASH diet/exercise into their daily lives and whether it has effectively lowered their blood pressure. The community members will be taught and equipped with relevant knowledge on better practices for avoiding unhealthy lifestyles.
The purpose of this study is to determine if the geriatric population are being educated about hypertension and the DASH diet and if education can increase knowledge. First, I will provide a survey to determine their current knowledge of hypertension along with their current dietary habits. Then I will provide education regarding simple diet modifications as well as exercise that may help better manage your hypertension. Then another survey after to see if the education provided increased your knowledge and if it is something they can incorporate into your everyday life.
The number of participants was 15.
The population from which subjects will be recruited will be 70+ in age and consist of both male and female participants.
I recruited subjects with flyers posted at the community center along with face-to-face scheduled education.
I will attach the survey questions as well as the paper.
Out of the 15 participants: 6 of them had knowledge of hypertension and how the DASH diet effects there blood pressure; where the other 9 did not feel knowledgeable of those things. After the education was completed, additional survey was completed and 13 out of the 15 stated they felt much more knowledgeable regarding DASH diet and hypertension and feel that it is a very easy diet modification with proven results to lower blood pressure. The 13 out of 15 participants stated they felt they could incorporate this into there every day lives.
