Essay: Argumentative Writing
Length: A minimum of 3 pages of text, double spaced, Times New Roman 12 point font
Background: The goal of this essay is to display argumentative writing, to treat writing an essay like you are entering a debate. You must be able to reference what others have said about a subject and articulate why you agree or disagree with their arguments. In this essay you will practice engaging in debate with other texts.
Assignment: Social media has arguably caused a seismic shift in how our society communicates and shares information. Do you believe this shift has been largely positive or negative? Is social media something that has made us more intelligent, or is it something that has dumbed us down? Overall, do you believe this technology has had a positive or negative effect on our culture? Explain your answer in a 3 page argumentative essay. In your argument, you must reference at least 1 of the 2 outside sources attached.
Expectations: Your essay will consist of the following elements: an original title, an introduction that defines and provides context for your topic, a clear thesis statement (this should tell me whether you think social media has had an overall positive or negative effect on our society), body paragraphs that further explain your argument and engage in analysis of outside texts – do you agree, disagree, or agree to a point with the writers’ main arguments?, a conclusion paragraph to sum up your thoughts on the subject matter.
References: “Why the Past 10 Years of American Life Have Been Uniquely Stupid”; The Social Dilemma
Advice: Organize your essay’s body paragraphs around different aspects of your argument. Make sure each body paragraph has a clear purpose. Also, clarify your position in relation to your outside sources -do you agree, disagree, or agree to a point with what these writers are saying?
Purpose: Demonstrate your ability to engage in argumentative writing and respond to outside texts.
Audience and Style: Your audience is educated adults. Avoid slang, jargon, or overly informal writing.
