Describe Okonkwo, the protagonist of “Things Fall Apart.”
Okonkwo came from humble beginnings and had to work hard to become successful. His father was poor and failed as a farmer, which left Okonkwo with no choice but to take responsibility for his own destiny at an early age in life. In order to prove that he was capable of success despite his family’s history, he strived for greatness through courage, discipline, and hard work he gained fame throughout the village as a powerful wrestler and wealthy farmer who owned much land than any other person in Umuofia.
At first glance, Okonkwo appears severe and stern because of his need to uphold his reputation as a fearless warrior; however it is important to note that while this portrayal is accurate- it doesn’t capture all sides of him or how complex he truly was as character. Despite being driven by ambition and prideful about having achieved success on his own terms- Okonkwo also possessed deep-seated feelings of insecurity stemming from both personal experiences growing up with an ill-fated father whose failures weighed heavily on him personally – as well has societal expectations placed on men within traditional Igbo culture where strength & power were valued so highly yet often unattainable by those born into poverty or misfortune like himself . This inner conflict between wanting desperately be seen “strong enough” while simultaneously feeling inadequate because unable rise up against seemingly insurmountable odds created internal struggle within him that shaped many decisions made throughout course story ultimately driving tragic conclusion events which brought downfall demise not just himself but entire community alike
